John Quick
John baptized May 29th, 1768 in North Branch, Somerset Co. New Jersey [1] died May 9th, 1851 in Maple Grove, Barry Co. Michigan. John married Phoebe Smith born about 1762 (assumed but not correct) on May 3rd, 1787-89 in Knowlton, Sussex, Co. New Jersey. Sometime around 1800, John had moved to Pennsylvania.[2] John the youngest son of Peter (Petrus) Quick has been quite an enigma. According to his own family history “was living in Oxford, Sussex County, NJ when he entered the service in 1777. John was a Private in the Company Command of Captain Joseph Mackay and served in the regiment of Colonel Robert Manfield in the New Jersey line for two years. He was promoted to a Non-Commissioned officer, Orderly Sergeant for General Green. Orderly Sgt. Quick was engaged in the Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Monmoth; he marched through Trenton, Lamberton, Morristown and Elizabethtown in New Jersey. At the battle of Trenton he was hit with a musket ball that left a “conspicuous” scar on his leg. After the Battle of Trenton the regiment moved to Milltown, NJ. Orderly SGT Quick lay with his regiment until April and then fought in the battle of Monmoth under the command of General Green. He was discharged from the Army in 1780, having served 3 years, 9 months and 17 days. After the Revolutionary War, John Quick lived in Pennsylvania, Canada, and Wilson, Niagara County, New York. In 1842, as their age advanced, John and his wife Phoebe took up residence with their son Abram and daughter-in-law Ruth in Maple Grove, Barry County, Michigan. John & Phoebe Quick’s son was among the earliest and most active pioneers in Maple Grove Township."[3]
After reading John’s entire 110-page Revolutionary War Pension application, it is quite apparent that John falsified his service in the war to get a pension. The first clue would be a birth record in 1768 because he would have been 15 when the war ended and nine in 1777 when he declared he entered service. The second clue is that Captain Joseph Mackey was a Sussex Co. New Jersey Militia Captain and not under the command of Col. Robert Mansfield. A part of John’s pension records sums it up on slides 884-886 from a letter written by John's son-in-law, William Leach, husband of Fanny Lavindah Quick, Johns daughter in 1848.
“Now please sir I have something more to say in regards to the subject Mr. Quick and his friends in boasting that he will soon get his Pension. Mr. McArthur & Thompson advanced Mr. Quick store goods on the strength of his pension to the amount of twenty-five dollars as I have been informed and he was Mr. Casler a large amount for board for the last two years they can’t bear to give him up they are willing he should rob the government a little longer if they can get their money I have had hints that they are writing slanderous letters about me. I have no knowledge that I said one word about Mrs. Casler. Which was common repeat they took me up for slander it was tried before Judge Thompson County I made no defense and they got a small judgement against me that is all the reason they have to write slanderous letters about me I am willing to show you that I am an honest man and a man of truth by as many signers as you wish Esq (P**) told me last winter that he knowed Mr. Quick to be a false pensioner he told him his age and he was too young a man to be a soldier in the Revolutionary War. I have heard a number say that they should judge Mr Quick to be over 80 years old according to his looks and labor if they have wrote anything slanderous about me please to forward them back to me. People are generally satisfied here that Mr. Quick is a false pensioner and his friends are talking up for him for to get their pay of him. Mr. Quick had made his beings that he will spend 40 Dollars in lawing me if he get s his pension it is hard for the innocent to be punished and the guilty go hear the complaint I made to Mr. Hastings I am willing to qualify when called on as far as I stated I knowed (?) at present your humble servant – William Leech” [2]
John’s pension was suspended just before just May 1848 because “he was not entitled to it” (pension slide 860), Ironically after John died, Phoebe received an $80 a year widows pension that was dated May 9th, 1851 (pension slide 879). A letter to James E. Heath written by a John A. Wendel says that Phoebe “is not entitled to a pension” on March 28th, 1853 (pension slide 905). I am not sure he was aware, but Phoebe passed on Dec 31st, 1852.[2] It seems no-one read all of the pension application files and these were used for acceptance into the DAR. This new information should disqualify John’s DAR status as Ancestor A093071. The good news is that John’s father, Peter (Petrus) Quick served and he is Ancestor A0930800. In the write up of Petrus Quick John mentions ways his father contributed to the war effort. It is the authors' firm belief that John probably participated in some unofficial capacity in the war due to the fact that all six of his brothers and father served on and off through the entire war. The war even came to their home in mention of an incident where the family hung a tory in the front yard mentioned in his brother Samuels pension application.[4]
John’s son William Rankin Quick born 1804 is listed as being born at Highland Creek Ontario, Canada. We know from a few Canadian censuses that William was born in the United States.[6][7] According to Abraham S. Quick, the John Quick family lived in Pennsylvania for 14 years (pension slide 839)[2] and John Quick is listed living in Wilson, Niagara Co. New York by 1830, and was still there in 1840.
